Ropes and Lanyard

What we check:

  • Ends of the Ropes and Lanyards
  • Mechanical Damage to the Sheath
  • Chemical Damage
  • Thermal Damage
  • Seam Integrity
  • Core Damage – Soft or Hard Zones
  • Knots

Ends of the Ropes and Lanyards:

  • If you find any problems with the ends of the ropes or lanyards, the product must be retired from use. For newer products, it is possible to discuss and return for repair by the manufacturer.
  • For older products, repair is usually not possible due to the perforations already existing in the material that needs to be re-sewn.

Example of undamaged endings:

Mechanical Damage:

If the sheath is damaged due to contact with another object such that its integrity is compromised, the rope or lanyard must be retired from use.

Chemical Damage:

If discoloration on the rope or lanyard or its stitching does not disappear after cleaning or when touching or rubbing changes the shape or color of the rope or lanyard, the product should be retired.

Thermal Damage:

If the rope or lanyard remains blackened (soot) even after cleaning, or the rope or lanyard has a glassy surface or breaks or flakes when rubbed, the product should be retired.

Seam Integrity:

If a seam is shorter, unraveling, worn or torn, or is showing signs of thermal or chemical damage on one or more threads, the product should be retired.

Core Damage:

Inspection of the core is done by bending the rope into an „Omega“ shape gradually throughout the length of the rope. If you find, places along the length of the rope where there are hard or soft zones it is possibly a problem spot. These sections can be removed by cutting them out. Two shorter ropes can result from the cut (with agreement from the user). The ends of these ropes must be sealed and properly labeled (length, year of manufacture, etc.).

Knots:

all knots must be undone prior to the inspection. If that is not possible, a mechanism for reviewing the knots should be carefully considered. According to the rope‘s specifications, a remedy can be done or the product should be retired from use.
